The Handmaid’s Tale Review – Seasons 1-3

It took about a week-ish to complete the series because; what.a.great.show.

So, by now I think most people are familiar with the show but let’s give it a quick summary. The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian story that takes in modern times and it is way too familiar right now.

Elizabeth Moss is simply perfect in The Handmaid’s Tale

It is violent, it is brutal, it is honest and it is foresighted. It was very uncomfortable and frustrating to watch. I am from a conservative country and it is not getting any better here. It can be clearly seen that there is a new order targeted by the government. And what frustrating is that the system is not very different than the one in The Handmaid’s Tale. Maybe it won’t be this extreme but the values are definitely there. And to see that hurts. A lot. For me, the concept that looks so familiar made it easier to immerse myself in the series. I am one of those people who talks, fights with the TV, You cannot believe the fights I had against our TV while watching this series. I cannot remember another time I swore so much against TV while watching a TV show.

I’m gonna write about this in a separate article I think. Living in a suppressed country sucks.

An important factor for me to love the show so much is Elizabeth Moss. What a performance. There is no limit to the emotions and thoughts she can reflect with a glance, a word, or even a mimic. My god, she is amazing. She might be one of the best, if not the best, actors working right now. Deserves every praise.

Throughout three seasons one more thing shines more than the others. That is the soundtrack. The Handmaid’s Tale soundtrack is delicious. It’s fun, accurate, meaningful, and full of good songs. Loved it.

I think the first season is the best one yet. Setting up the rules and the players perfectly. And, speaking of perfect, nobody is perfect in this show. Everybody has their good and bad sides, twisted and decent sides. People are grey. The situation isn’t, the situation is dark.

The second season did not start so hot. It was boring in places. At least until the middle. After mid-season, it seemed to have caught the tempo in the first season. Although it is not as good as the first season, it ended things properly.

And then came the third. I think we watched it in two days. First 9 episodes one Day and the remaining three the next. It was a great season. I don’t wanna spoil things but I just wanna say watching some stuff crumble down was fun. Or, satisfying.

You don’t have fun watching it. It’s a damn dark show. Makes you related, makes you question, makes you frustrate while appreciating great acting by everyone, and admiring the great writing and direction in some stunning shots and intense imagery. Hats off to all the directors and cinematographers involved.

I didn’t watch Mad Man yet, so seeing a Gilmore Girl being so compelling was surprising to me. Alexis Bledel is also great.

I’m not gonna get into woke stuff that I’ve seen in a few reviews. I think the show is filled with badass women in various races and sexual orientations. Nothing bothered me. I don’t know Margaret Atwood much, I’ve heard she is an Islamophobic, to be honest, of course not all but some stuff they use in the show is sadly accurate.

I didn’t read the book but I definitely will. If the series can be this violent, I can’t imagine what the book is like. I can’t wait to read it.
