I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a thriller by Iain Raid that you can go through within a day. It’s about 200 pages. We follow the narrator and her boyfriend Jake, they are on a road trip to meet Jake’s parents.
It starts as a typical road trip story. We have a couple traveling on a very secluded road, talking about life within the framework of philosophy, sociology, and psychology. This structure goes on about halfway through the book. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about the book therefore this structure made me question why the book qualifies as a thriller. Don’t get me wrong, they come up with some good topics, express ideas that can create some discussion and it’s never boring to read. But until they reach the house, I kept wondering where the hell is the thrill. I thought this book is very mis-advertised and its Goodreads score made sense. But then as soon as you hit the mid, shit also hits the fan. You start to pick up things and feel intrigued.
I am a sucker for character-driven stories. Give me a few well established, interesting characters and even if your plot is weak, I am interested, I will read your stuff. I’m Thinking of Ending Things has an interesting lead also it’s plot is not weak either. What’s not to like!
I’ll tell you what’s not to like, it drags a little towards the end. Throughout the story, their dialogues serve a purpose. It’s either for character building or informative. This is the same for inner monologues as well. But towards the end, in front of the school, an unrelated train of thoughts brakes the pace a bit. It didn’t add much. Or maybe I didn’t understand it, I don’t know. It lasts just a few pages and doesn’t lessen the quality of the work, nonetheless, I could live without it.
So overall, it wasn’t the most shocking or twisty story for me but I enjoyed it a lot. I hesitated to give it five stars because of the stuff I mentioned above but what the hell, I read it very quickly, rarely lost focus and it was a hell of a ride.
I’m thinking Of Ending Things: 5/5
