I QUIT! I resigned from my soul-sucking, miserable job. September 30th was my last day and I feel great. I’m going to stay unemployed and read and write and play and watch and keep feeling great. Because I do not dream of labor.
So, to celebrate this wonderful period of my life, I’ve put together a tbr list of a few books that I think I’d give five stars to, or four stars at worst. Gonna be a fun reading month. Let’s start, shall we?

THE SHADOW OF THE GODS – JOHN GWYNNE : I finished the faithful and the fallen series in July by reading Wrath finally. It’s such a good series that it made it to my list of best fantasy books. I know I’m supposed to continue with his Of Blood and Bone series but I’m so damn curious about this one. So, October it is.
PROJECT HAIL MARY – ANDY WEIR : I don’t think it is necessary to explain this at length. I loved The Martian so much. It was great fun. I didn’t read Artemis after the negative reviews of a few people I trust and the general audience. I bought it, but my hand did not go to it still. Now I hear that Project Hail Mary is closer to the Martian, just as entertaining and gripping. So I will go for it.
NIGHTFALL – DANIEL BARNETT : Of course, there is no option not to read horror in October. One of the horror novels I chose for October is Nightfall. It’s been on my endless TBR list for a long time, but these days Lezlie the Nerdie Narrative (watch her if you’re not watching. She’s great) praises it so much that I don’t want to make it wait any longer. So I’m gonna jump into Daniel Barnett’s Nightmareland Chronicles with Nightfall in October.

THE HOUSE ON ABIGAIL LANE – KEALAN PATRICK BURKE : And my second horror book is gonna be the one and only Kealan Patrick Burke’s The House on Abigail Lane. I’ve read Sour Candy (I reviewed it back in 2020), Blanky and Turtle Boy by Kealan Patrick Burke until now and I love his stories. Such a creative mind he has. My least favorite was Turtle Boy (I gave it 3 stars) but even that stayed with me for a while. So I can’t wait to read more of his stuff. Definitely one of my favorite horror authors.
MY HEART IS A CHAINSAW – STEPHEN GRAHAM JONES : Stephen Graham Jones is also one of the horror writers that the pandemic introduced me to. I’ve read Mapping the Interior and although I didn’t feel connected to the story or its lead much I loved, LOVED the atmosphere he created. He has such a eerie, tense but captivating style that it was impossible for me not to read another of his books. So I picked his latest book, My Heart is a Chainsaw as my audiobook for October.
MIGRATIONS – CHARLOTTE MCCONAGHY : And the other audiobook I’ll listen is Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. This was also in my tbr for a long time. I also have it on my kindle but I I think it will be a good pastime when I go for a walk. It has a 9 hours-ish duration. And with my heart is a Chainsaw which is 12 hrs long, these audiobooks will keep me company during the month.
I believe this is it. One book a week and two audiobooks for the month seem ideal to me to regain rhythm again. This is gonna be good.
What do you think? Have you read any of these books? Is any of them on your list this month? Let me know what you think!
Have great horror month everyone!
