Now that the Goodreads choice awards 2021 have been announced and they’re mostly bad choices again, it’s time to choose what I want to read for 2022 among the nominees.
I had a goal of reading 67 books this year, and since audiobooks are out of my life, I will barely reach my goal, so I’m considering not raising my goal for 2022, and actually thinking about lowering it to 65. Since I don’t read most of the categories awarded, I will read 12 books that interest me in the categories I read. God, 12 books sounds so little, right? 2021 seemed to be a good year for newly released books, but when I look at the nominees, I feel like maybe that wasn’t the case…
So, let’s get down to business

FICTION: I haven’t read a single book from the fiction category this year. And almost none of them tickles my curiosity. But Charlotte McConaghy’s Once There Were Wolves is one of the nominees and I am supercurious about her novel, Migrations as well, so I’m putting this one to my 2022 reading list too. It’s set in Scotland, has wolves and a murder mystery, so it sounds right up my alley. Marked as want to read.
MYSTERY-THRILLER: Of the nominees, I only read Billy Summers because Stephen King, how can I not. But Push by Ashley Audrain and We Begin At The End by Chris Whitaker are already in my tbr so I am definitely writing these two books on my 2022 to-read list.
FANTASY: I read two of them among the 2021 fantasy nominees. The Shadow Of The Gods and She Who Became The Sun. You can find my The Shadow Of The Gods review here and She Who Became The Sun review here. I also have The Unbroken by C.L. Clark, Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon so I’m going to read them. I don’t think I will ever read a Sarah J. Maas book; she is too hyped for me.

SCIENCE FICTION : This was a weird year for science fiction. It’s usually one of my go to genres but this year, among the nominees, I’ve only read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, which I enjoyed a lot and will review next week. I have Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor, A Psalm For The Wild Build by Becky Chambers, Shards Of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky and Machinehood by S.B. Divya on my tbr so I will try to read them but if I have to pick some of them, I think I’ll pick Remote Control and A Psalm For THe Wild Build for my 2022 Goodreads Reading Challenge.

HORROR : What an interesting year this was. I’ve actually read so many great horror in 2021 but among the nominations I’ve only read Later by Stephen King and to be honest, I don’t even count that as horror. Nonetheless, I have some of them on my tbr already. I am going to read The House On The Needless Street by Catriona Ward, My Heart Is A Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, The Book Of Accidents by Chuck Wendig and Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo in 2022. I also discovered Ronald Malfi this year so I might give Come With Me a chance.
NONFICTION : I don’t read a lot of nonfiction, and there are maybe two nonfictions on my 2022 to-read list. Naturall, I have read none of the 2021 nominees, but Elizabeth Colbert’s Under A White Sky and Chanda Prescod-Weinstein’s The Disordered Cosmos caught my attention. If I had to pick one, I’d put Under A White Sky on my list.
Besides these, there are plenty of debut novels and comics that I have read, but none of the candidates in the categories caught my attention this year. There will definitely be new writers I will want to read in 2022; I am going to leave the choice to time. Comic book wise I really liked Something is Killing The Children, which I read this year as a comic book. In fact, I will probably continue with House of Slaughter.
And here we are. This is my 12-book Goodreads Reading Challenge 2022 list. Unlike 2021, I plan to stick to my reading plans and blogging a little more this year. Compared to the rest of the year, I don’t seem to be doing badly in December, and I hope I can carry that enthusiasm into next year. In addition, I will prepare my list of 22 books I want to read in 2022 challenge list next week. 2022 is shaping up to be a good reading year for now. But it’s earth, so we can never know…
